         KINDERGARTEN

Integrated Curriculum

The Kindergarten curriculum will be taught through the Integrated Curriculum Model.  An Integrated Curriculum breaks down barriers between subjects and makes learning more meaningful to students.  Learning is organized around themes with which students can identify, such as "Community," "Mythology and Legends," or "Growth."  Major concepts are pulled from these broad themes, and learning activities are related to these concepts.

Special Monthly Activities

In addition to the regular curriculum, Kids' Corner offers a special monthly activity.  These include field trips, in-house presentations, and other onsite events that relate to the month's curriculum theme.

Large Group Blocks

The Large Group Blocks are 15 minute group instruction periods. The Kindergarten class as a whole will discuss and work together to explore the following areas:

  • Science - The Science block will cover seasons, plants, animals, air, water, and space.  It will be a fun learning environment in which children gain knowledge about the planet Earth.  The goal is for the children to have a better understanding of the wonders of nature.

  • Social Studies - The Social Studies block will allow students to learn about their neighborhoods and communities.  The students will explore these themes through community projects, recycling activities, and projects addressing how they themselves relate to the world around them.

Small Group Blocks

The Small Group Blocks are 25 minute group instruction periods. There are four learning areas that will be covered under the Small Group Block:

  • Spanish - Children will be exposed to the Spanish language and be given a glimpse into Spanish speaking cultures. The children will learn simple conversational phrases and familiar everyday words.

  • Visual Arts - Children will work with a wide variety of media, which will include collage, painting, printmaking, clay, and drawing. They will learn about the basics of art making (2D, 3D, form, texture, & design), and they will be exposed to the work of famous artists.

  • Creative Expressions - Children will have opportunities to explore stories and express themselves creatively through activities such as journaling and picture representations.

  • Hands-On Learning - Children will be able to use their hands to manipulate the world around them. Activities will include cooking, nature walks, dramatic play, and music. The goal is for each child to develop a greater sense of self-awareness and self-expression as well as to gain comfort

Mini Courses

Mini Courses allow students the opportunity to explore in depth the areas of music and drama, visual arts, and sports.  Children will receive additional exposure to these areas in a small group setting through creative and fun activities specific to each discipline.  Mini Courses meet weekly on a rotating schedule so children are introduced to all areas throughout the course of the year.

Big Group Game

In Big Group Game (BGG) children will utilize their gross motor skills (catching, running, throwing, etc.) and learn the concepts of teamwork, cooperation, and fair play. In this fun environment, good sportsmanship will be emphasized.
